At the end of 2019 there were almost 80 million forcibly displaced people across the world and 26 million refugees. International migrants compose 3.5% of the world’s population. Achieving the SDG core principle to “leave no one behind” can require differentiating or disaggregating data by migration status.
Both traditional and new data sources can play an important role in supporting policy and humanitarian responses to migration. Migrant communities can be particularly vulnerable to data abuses, and new sources of data need to be well governed to respect privacy.
