Crime and Justice
The protection of human rights, the delivery of the sustainable development goals, and the creation of safe, secure societies all rest upon the rule of law and well-functioning justice systems.
Data can be used to build public trust in policing, to support the accountability and efficiency of court systems, and to increase access to justice. It can be used in particular to address the scourge of gender-based violence. At the same time, there is a need for strong governance regarding how data is used by the criminal justice system, both in order to prevent the reproduction of bias in algorithmic decision-making and to protect people and communities from unjust surveillance and control.
