We are excited to announce that a draft of our research handbook is open for review! The handbook introduces our approach and the primary indicators proposed for the 2021 pilot edition of the Global Data Barometer. We would very much welcome your feedback. It will be available for review until May 10th, 2021.
What the handbook contains
The handbook provides information on the Barometer’s methodology, guidance for country-level researchers and regional coordinators about our data collection and validation processes, and detailed question-by-question assessment guidance. It’s designed to be used both by the researchers and reviewers generating and validating the Barometer’s survey data, and as a reference for those seeking to understand the data that the study produces.
The handbook includes core modules, thematic modules, and snapshot modules, that focus on:
Capabilities Climate action Company information
COVID-19 Crime and justice Energy
Land Political integrity Population
Public procurement Transportation
In every module you will find information on why we selected its prospective indicators and how they explore data for public good. When you drill down further to explore at the indicator level, you will also find each indicator’s specific sub-questions, as well as relevant definitions, indicator-specific research guidance, and a more specific explanation for why we have included that indicator. If you know of resources we should add to any of our indicator-specific research guidance, please let us know!
At the indicator level, we are particularly interested in getting your feedback on the following questions:
- Is there something about an indicator or sub-question that doesn’t fit well with your country’s practices?
- Can you identify specific ways the data an indicator generates can be useful in your country or region?
- Can you identify specific harms that generating this data might prompt in your country or region that we should be aware of?
- Have we made an error, or do you see that something critical is missing?
How to provide feedback
You can provide feedback in two ways: First we have enabled Hypothes.is on all handbook pages to allow you to share feedback directly on the text. This is similar to commenting using Google Docs, producing comments that are visible to all viewers of the handbook. Second, you can comment using the feedback form available on each indicator. Directions for how to annotate are also included on handbook pages.) And, of course, you can also always share your feedback by emailing our team feedback@globaldatabarometer.org. The research handbook will be open for review until May 10th, 2021.
The release of the research handbook is a key step towards bringing our expert survey and the pilot edition of the Global Data Barometer into the field. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.
